KNIT ME BABY one more time ...

-Hey Jill! Introduce yourself...

My name is Jill, and I make knitwear under the name Tony Chestnut.

-What do you make/create/do?

I had a clothing line for the last 20 years, but recently shifted over to just making knitwear. The knits I make are called ragknits, and they're based on rags made out of yarn scraps.

-What is the inspiration behind your work?

My Mennonite matriarchs are my main inspiration. They made rags out of yarn scraps... no scrap was wasted. I'm inspired by frugality and the unexpected and unbridled creativity that comes out of people in their everyday (frugal) lives. I'm also inspired by colour combinations... they are endless and I want to try all of them.

-What is one thing that is different about the work that you create, compared to others in your field?

The sweaters I make are raw and imperfect and meant to be like wearing a party. They are the opposite of flattering; intentionally. Yet still very beautiful. Because beauty is complicated.

-What is a dream project/opportunity that you hope to get to do one day?

I would love to knit unwearable clothing... Like, get really weird. I would also love to knit a public art piece... something for people to interact with and to catch their interest to remind them of beauty and fun.

-Take this opportunity to tell us about another local artist/creator that you love... Who is putting out cool shit that keeps you inspired and excited?

I love the artist Bistyek. His paintings are incredible, and I love the way that he integrates his aesthetic into textiles and clothing manipulation. Big fan.

Thank you so much, Jill.
