we visit his textile studio

meet roy...

G: Hey Roy! Please introduce yourself and let us know what your work/art practice is.

R: I'm Roy Liang. I grew up in the Interlake and have been sewing for over 40 years! I've always liked textiles. It's like telling something about myself without saying anything.

G: Is there a specific project that you're currently working on, or that you're particularly excited about?

R: I've really gotten into old fashioned quilting, but putting a modern twist on things. I've collected vintage fabrics since the 80's and I am finally using them up in a way that doesn't look "vintage".

I've also been making little quilts out of the vintage fabrics and sewing them into repurposed sweatshirts. I sell a lot of these pieces under my small sewing collection called "Winnipeg North of Fargo". I'm also quilting all of my old favourite album covers. You'd have to see them as I can't really describe them.

G: What do you want fans/clients to know about how to access your work?

R: I am not very social media savvy. I still like doing in-person sales and markets to interact with people.

G: In the spirit of supporting local businesses and artists, please let us know your thoughts on the following...

-What's your favourite restaurant/cocktail bar to visit in the city?

R: Passero and Baby Baby!

-What's your favourite activity/experience/place to hangout in the city?

R: Besides markets, I love to eat out. We've stopped eating out frequently and instead chose to eat out less often in trendier places. It's all we can afford these days lol.

-Is there something in the city that you're excited to visit or participate in for the first time this spring/summer?

R: Getting into my garage! I turn it into a studio in the summer.

Thank you, roy!

If you'd like to see and purchase any of Roy's work, check his collection "Winnipeg North of Fargo" out at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, in person or online.

Roy wears his Kuboraum frames throughout the shoot, and shows off a couple more frames from his growing collection.
